We are experts in teaching Java programming. There are a lot of different coding languages. For someone just learning about computer programming, the sheer number of languages, variations and disciplines can be overwhelming. For every coding language, there are a range of schools, training programs and boot camps to offer instruction. Choosing a language will help determine what kind of job you land, so it is important to understand the path that a coding language leads to.
At Skill Distillery, we teach two languages: Java and JavaScript. Whereas JavaScript, along with CSS and HTML, is standard for front-end development, the choice of server-side programming languages is up for debate. Many programs choose Ruby, others Python, but we chose Java.
No idea what we’re talking about? What’s the difference between Java, Ruby or any other languages? Java (not to be confused with JavaScript) is something like a bridge between layers in websites. Imagine the different parts of an e-commerce website in three layers: at one end, a database manages inventory, at the other is a front-facing web page. Java builds the bridge between these layers and allows the whole system to operate, making it an indispensable part of any system. Java is used in systems for financial services, shopping, cyber security and much more.
We confidently decided to teach Java for a couple of reasons. First, we’ve been teaching Java in various incarnations for two decades to corporations looking to train and re-train employees. Our parent company, Batky-Howell, is constantly asked to train people in Java. As industry demand has exploded, we saw that companies were willing to hire people with the expectation that we would train them to be junior Java programmers. Seeing that we could successfully create a course in Java, train junior talent and ensure they were hired at big firms, we founded a boot camp.
Perhaps the most important reason we are a Java Coding Bootcamp is because it is far and away the most in-demand programming language available. Year after year, jobs reports tell us that Java is the most broadly used language by businesses across the spectrum of industry sectors. Skills in Java are highly sought after. We know that there are about 15,000 open programming jobs in Colorado alone, and that 10,000 of those jobs require a Java background. With industry feedback that clear, the opportunity to get students placed after learning Java was clear.
To keep up with industry, we are constantly updating our curriculum and best practices to make sure the course we are teaching is up to date. We work with industry partners and companies that hire our grads to make sure that we are teaching tools that can be immediately applied to the real world.
